B-DAY 07/28/1951- David 06/27/1975 - Luke
E: Plano, TX
2) PPH: How long have you been shooting ??
E: David 36 years, Luke 12 years professionally but grew up in my father's studio
3) PPH: What camera gear do you use / and what's your favorite lens ??
E: We have always been a Nikon family. We have an arsenal of equipment but in our day-to-day activities we typically shoot with Nikon D3 and D3x's - David loves the 70-200 VR II and Luke loves the 200 2.0 & 85 1.4.
4) PPH: Do you have a memorable wedding photography moment ??
E: Luke - Couple things come to mind - one was the 13 year old brother of the bride who thought it would be "guy funny" to give his sister a Nascar or World Series win champagne bath right after she made her entrance to the reception...She hasn't even been able to have her first dance, cake cutting or anything and here she is sticky, dripping wet, hair falling, make-up running with a mixture of shock and horror on her face. Her mother told her it was quite alright to "kill him." =)
Another was when we were in New Delhi, India and my "personal driver" decided to take another gig (even though he had been paid to drive only us that week) and kept claiming he would be there in 5 minutes. I had been told that it can take from 30 minutes to 2 hours to get to the outskirts of the city, where the groom's house was. As a final resort I hopped in a taxi - of course the cellphone batter was on it's last leg and the driver only had an opportunity to hear the groom's address once before the battery died. Thank goodness that after the mad dash drive - the drums for the groom's ceremony had started and guided us in to the exact right house!
David - The Mission Impossible stunt double that delivered the groom rappelling from the helicopter was definitely a dramatic entrance that stands out. And the THREE Sylvia Weinstock 20 foot cake creations they had definitely "took the cake" so speak!
5) PPH: First car? Today's car? What do you want in the future ??
E: Luke - My first car was my father's 1973 MG-BGT that we worked on together to get back up and running...I've had my Jeep Wrangler for forever now - and I'm just as in love with it today as the day I got it - it's a fun club to be a member of. Future car? Something that that includes seat warmers as a sweet gift to my fiancee.
David - First car was a VW Bug with mag pipes, today it's a 5-series BMW that was a gift from my children. Future car? BATMOBILE!
6) PPH: Is there anyone else in the "biz" you enjoy shooting with? why? who would you like to shoot with ??
E: We enjoyed having Mike Colon join us for a big wedding here in Dallas. And it was fun to give back and shoot his former assistant, Rosanna's wedding last year in Georgia. Since Jerry Ghionis doesn't shoot his weddings with another photographer, Luke went with the next best thing and is really looking forward to having him shoot his wedding in April!
7) PPH: Where would you like to shoot that you haven't yet ??
E: Luke - I'd love to shoot a wedding in Morocco - been to Senegal before and fell in love with Western Africa!
David - Glaciers would be an amazing backdrop - maybe Iceland or up in the Scandinavian countries.
8) PPH: Where would be your dream " desti " location ??
E: David - A simple beach wedding in Tahiti with a couple that places a high importance on getting amazing images!
Luke - Prague would be a dream destination for me - the beautiful cityscapes, people and churches!
9) PPH: What good tips can you give to a photographer starting off today ??
E: David - Remember to be patient - take a look at what you were doing a year ago and see just how far you have progressed. See the community of photographers as your friends and allies and not your competition.
Luke - Fail with confidence - you are going to have good days and bad days - be better than you were yesterday. Think long-term and invest in the people and relationships in your industry. Give back abundantly and if you are just starting out - have a teachable spirit that is open to growing and education. Instead of learning "the hard way", learn from others who have gone before you so you can avoid making the same mistakes...you will make plenty on your own anyways!
10) PPH: What is the one approach / step that took your studio to where it is today ??
E: Luke - Maturity - in being able to work with my father not for my father. Humbleness - that it's not just my own talents but God's blessing that guides my camera and vision to see moments and light. Faithfulness, God is our best agent and opens doors that we could never even know were out there, even with the best publicist in the world.
David - Totally agree! And in looking back at having 30 plus years of lifetime clients - be generous and kind with them. The cost of a one-sell is typically too high to be profitable. It's a life-time of repeat business that keeps you from having to keep going out and find new clients. When people like you as a person - they stay with you.
pph: In your words any great projects / workshop / seminars / dvds / actions in the works ??

(02.05.10 @ 02:39 PM)What a great interview Ray. I can attest as others have that these two guys are not only great photographers, but even better people. B-Day November-15
1) PPH: Where
is home ??
JG: Seattle USA!
2) PPH: How long have
you been shooting ?? JG: 10 years professionally but
first became interested in middle school. Crazy how that pin hole camera
assignment worked out!
3) PPH: What
camera gear do you use / and what's your favorite lens ??JG: I am a
lover of my Canon equipment. I shoot both of the the Mark 3's for my non
commercial work. Man, to pick one lens would be tough. Each has its part within
my goal of telling stories. I feel that showing a lot focal length diversity
though out an assignment makes for a more beautiful story. I will say that my
favorite daylight lenses are the 70-200 2.8, 24-70 2.8 and the 16-35.2.8 At
night I go to 85 1.2, 24, 1.4 and the 50 1.2. That latter 3 are the sexiest but
also the slowest to use. I carry them all in my BODA lens bag. A bag I
developed for just this purpose. Carrying it on body, accessable by one hand,
while you shoot. Examples at www.goboda.com
4) PPH: Do you
have a memorable wedding photography moment ?? JG:Each, very
memorable however some have seriously touch me to the point of changing my
entire style Emily & Marshall, 2006. These two showed so much love for each
other on that day. It was like the World had stopped spinning during their
vows. The emotion throughout the day was overwhelming. I got totally caught up
in it. It was there wedding that inspired us to move forward with story telling
photography. We had created a few albums but were not offering them
enthusiastically. Emily and Marshall's album was our 6 story album ever
created. It took 1st place at WPPI 2007 (studio category) and began a personal
creative revolution. You can see this album if you wish on our blog.:http://jgarnerphoto.bigfolioblog.com/
5) PPH: First car?
Today's car? What do you want in the future ?? JG: 1st car? Man
I loved that crappy Audi fox. Apparently, I didn't deserve it however. Crashed
and burned it within weeks. No car after that for awhile Now, my bride
mobile is a Rangerover.
6) PPH: Is there
anyone else in the "biz" you enjoy shooting with? why? who would you
like to shoot with ?? JG: YES! I love to be with my wife Katarina. In the first 5
years of shooting professionally she and I shot every assignment together, in
fact we were never apart. We now have been blessed with two little girls.
Gabriella and Linnea. Those girls deserve to have there Mommy on the weekends.
We've made adjustments to make that work. The largest being weining myself from
the need to have a 2nd shooter at all. This year, a few, next year, perhaps
more.
7) PPH: Where
would you like to shoot that you haven't yet ?? JG: So many
places. Paris, Italy? Sweden (where Katarina is from) A two day event would
make that a dream.
8) PPH: Where
would be your dream " desti " location ?? JG: I'm a Seattle
focussed shooter (because I am a Daddy of young girls), however we do allow
ourselves 5 destination weddings per year. In fact I'm on my way to Boston now
for what is to be a dream. For me, it's not so much about the location, but
rather the couple and how they experience their day and the depth of what it is
all about. I'm from rainy Seattle. I've been forced to open my eyes and find
the beauty that is always there on a wedding day regardless of the weather or
location. Sometimes beautiful locations are a distraction. Sometimes it's all a
distraction, the dress, the details, etc, etc. OK, I'm rambling now. Sorry
9) PPH: What
good tips can you give to a photographer starting off today ?? JG: Be sure
to make the EXPERIENCE of your clients the 1st priority in all that you do. You
can do this by subtly fitting the day to their style. Then, all you have to do
is set the scene, and the moments happen naturally. It becomes REAL. There will
be an article on this subject in an upcoming Professional Photographer
Magazine.
10) PPH: What is
the one approach / step that took your studio to where it is today ?? JG: Two
things. Experience planning with the couples, and story telling photography. I
no longer shoot for the shot. (if you will) I shoot a series of images that
tell a story when laid out in an album format. The crazy thing is that now,
that WOW shot comes with ease when compared to my old way of shot hunting. Why?
Because I am no longer concerned about getting it. I'm relaxed, the couple is
relaxed and free to enjoy things unfolding beautifully.
PPH: In your words
any great projects / workshop / seminars / dvds / in the works ?? JG: We like to
entertain all of you, our friends in the wedding industry by making fun of
ourselves. We've created a spoof of "the office" called "the
studio. 6 episodes up and more to come. Check them out on our blog http://jgarnerphoto.bigfolioblog.com/ I'll be
speaking at the PPA and Photoplus tradeshow and I have a platform at WPPI. I am
also teaming up with Catherine Hall, Gene Higa and Lori Nordstrom to do
something extra special for the Texas School next year.Workshops tentatively
planned for Spring next year. Let us know if you are interested by emailing
Katarina. She can be reached atjgpmentorship@jgarnerphoto.com

B-DAY September-6
1) PPH: Where is home ??
JG: Home is in an apartment in South Melbourne,
Australia. That being said, I feel quite at home living out of a suitcase in
another country.
2) PPH: How long have you been shooting ??
JG: professionally for 15 years.
3) PPH: What camera gear do you use / and what's your favorite lens ??
JG: I use 2 x 5d Mark II's and recently have been shooting with a Phase One and a P40+back. The quality and clarity of a Phase image is extraordinary. My favorite Canon lens is the 70-200 f2.8 L
4) PPH: Do you have a memorable wedding photography moment ??
JG: There are many but last year I shot a wedding in Miami, Florida of a beautiful couple, Alex and Hazel. After an amazing day, we ended up at the beach but it was pitch black. After insisting that we stay, I shot some of my favorite images of recent times. They looked beautiful straight out of the camera. One wow led to another wow which led to another wow which led to my favorite wow of the day. There was magic in the air. I could hear nothing but the wind playing a symphony and I was playing in tune. The final image was a homage to Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam."
5) PPH: First car? Today's car? What do you want in the future ??
JG: Ford Falcon XE was my first car. Up until a couple of years ago, I owned a BMW 330ci for 5 years. I now own a black Chrysler 300c. I love my current car but I would love a Maserati or an Aston Martin Vantage.
6) PPH: Is there anyone else in the "biz" you enjoy shooting with? why? who would you like to shoot with ??
JG: I haven't really shot with anyone else. I would have liked to shoot with Herb Ritts. (RIP)
7) PPH: Where would you like to shoot that you haven't yet ??
JG:Cambodia. I travelled there recently and fell in love with the people and culture. The temples are amazing.
8) PPH: Where would be your dream " desti " location ??
JG: Shooting a wedding that wanted a location shoot all around Italy.
9) PPH: What good tips can you give to a photographer starting
off today ??
JG: Don't forget to be a business person. Choose light above a nice location. Extraordinary effort, extraordinary results. Average effort, average results. Don't be a slave to the mouse. Lear to delegate. Don't forget what's most important to you. Remember, you don't have to be the best. You just have to be better than last week. Stop reading this and get to work!
10) PPH: What is the one approach / step that took your studio to where it is today ??
JG: I didn't waste my energy on what I feared. I expended my energy on my goals.
pph: In your words any great projects / workshop / seminars / dvds / in the works ??
